Environmental Health officer

Job Summary

The Environmental Health Officer will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and monitoring environmental health interventions aimed at improving sanitation, hygiene, waste management, and disease prevention within targeted communities. The officer will support project implementation, conduct assessments, prepare reports, and ensure compliance with organizational and donor standards.

   Key Responsibilities

• Plan and implement environmental health and sanitation activities in assigned operational areas.
• Conduct hygiene and sanitation assessments to identify public health risks and recommend appropriate interventions.
• Promote community awareness on hygiene, waste disposal, disease prevention, and environmental safety practices.
• Monitor water quality, sanitation facilities, and environmental health standards.
• Support the construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance of sanitation and waste management facilities.
• Prepare technical reports, activity updates, and project documentation.
• Coordinate with health teams, government offices, NGOs, and community representatives.
• Ensure project activities comply with IRC policies, donor requirements, and international humanitarian standards.
• Participate in emergency response activities related to public health and sanitation.
• Provide training and technical support to community workers and volunteers.

  Qualifications and Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, Sanitation, Water Supply, or a related field.
• Previous experience in environmental health, WASH, or humanitarian programs is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of sanitation and hygiene promotion principles.
• Excellent communication, teamwork, and community mobilization skills.
• Ability to prepare reports and maintain accurate documentation.
• Good computer skills, especially in Microsoft Office applications.
• Ability to work under pressure and in multicultural environments.
• Knowledge of local languages is an advantage.
