Job Summary

“This Nutrition Assistant position at Plan International involves supporting community nutrition programs, public health interventions, and humanitarian nutrition services in field locations across Ethiopia.”

The position plays a key role in improving the nutritional status of vulnerable populations, particularly children under five and pregnant and lactating women, through the delivery of targeted nutrition interventions.
The Nutrition Assistant will support the management of acute malnutrition cases under programs such as TSFP (Targeted Supplementary Feeding Program) and OTP (Outpatient Therapeutic Program), ensuring proper screening, referral, treatment follow-up, and recovery monitoring in line with national and international guidelines. The role also involves close collaboration with health facilities, community health workers, and government health offices to strengthen service delivery and ensure quality care.

     Key Duties and Responsibilities 

  •    Support the implementation of community-based nutrition programs under Plan International, including TSFP, OTP, and SAM/MAM case management
  • Conduct nutrition screening (MUAC, weight, height measurements) and identify malnourished children and vulnerable groups.
  • Ensure proper admission, follow-up, and discharge of beneficiaries according to national nutrition protocols.
  • Assist health facilities in delivering quality nutrition services and strengthening routine program activities.
  • Provide nutrition education and counseling to caregivers, pregnant women, and lactating mothers.
  • Monitor patient progress and ensure timely follow-up visits and home tracing for defaulters.
  • Maintain accurate data recording, reporting, and documentation of all nutrition cases.
  • Compile and submit weekly and monthly nutrition reports in line with organizational standards.
  • Work closely with government health offices, health extension workers, and community leaders.
  • Support capacity building and on-the-job training for community health workers when required.
  • Ensure compliance with national and international nutrition guidelines and standards.
  • Participate in field assessments, supervision visits, and coordination meetings.
  • Promote community awareness on proper nutrition, hygiene, and health practices.
  • Ensure proper management and use of nutrition supplies and report any shortages or issues.

   Requirements  

  • Diploma or BSc Degree in Nursing, Public Health, Nutrition, or a related field
  • Minimum of 1–3 years of relevant work experience, preferably with an NGO such as Plan International
  • Proven experience in community-based nutrition programs (TSFP, OTP, SAM/MAM management)
  • Strong knowledge of national nutrition guidelines and protocols
  • Experience in nutrition screening, case management, and reporting
  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken); knowledge of local language is an advantage
  • Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ability to work effectively in remote and hardship areas
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills
  • Good organizational, data management, and reporting abilities
  • High level of integrity, accountability, and professionalism
  • Willingness to travel frequently to field locations and communities
